The current article considers the anime “One-Punch Man” (2015–2019) from the standpoint of modern social philosophy and philosophy of culture. The main hypothesis is that “One-Punch Man” corresponds better than many other works to the request for a new sincerity and a revival of affect. The anime helps to overcome the tiring nature of the endless irony of postmodernism. The undertaken research conceptualizes the crisis of the genre of superhero films and comics. The new concept of a hero proposed in the anime is based on specific visual semiotics. This endeavour is considered as an attempt to refresh the genre according to the growing popularity of the post-ironic mode of thinking. In discussing the future of culture, it is suggested that endless irony is counterproductive to popular culture itself. Its intellectual removal, which could satisfy the sophisticated request of the modern consumer, requires cognitive complication and sophisticated work with the visual. Starting from the decisive importance of the visual in modernity, the author demonstrates how a complex statement is made with the help of the visual.
