Script Differences Hinder Language Switching in Bilinguals
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain used eye-tracking to examine how bilinguals switch between languages in response to context shifts. Script differences were found to slow down this process. When letters appear unfamiliar—such as the Latin alphabet in a Russian-language text—the brain does not immediately switch to the other language, even when the person is aware they are in a bilingual setting. The article has been published in Bilingualism: Language and Cognition.

Издательский проект Петра Первого: Илья Копиевский и новые русские книги

M. : Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie, 2025.
Zaretsky Y.
Academic editor: О. Е. Кошелева

A study by Yu. Zaretsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at the Higher School of Economics, tells about Peter the Great's publishing project during the Great Embassy and the executors of this project. The main one was a little-known native of the Belarusian lands, Ilya Kopievsky, who translated, compiled and published the first secular textbooks in Russian in the printing house of the Amsterdam merchant Jan Tessing. The author draws on new materials, on the basis of which he recreates the dramatic events of Kopievsky's biography, his difficult relationships with others, and the difficulties he faced in his translation and publishing activities. Amsterdam books have found a lot of readers in Russia — their names, occupation and range of interests are Yu. Zaretsky is being reconstructed on the basis of preserved owner's records. A thorough study of Kopievsky's life and works allows the author to take a fresh look at one of the important episodes in the history of Peter the Great's reforms.
